Drama Triangle
!Drama Triangle.png Psychiatrist Stephen Karpman identified a psychological pattern that keeps us trapped in cycles of conflict: the "drama triangle." As Martha Beck explains, this triangle forms when we feel small and weak, viewing others as either persecutors or rescuers.
We get locked into playing one of three roles: victim ("I'm helpless!"), persecutor ("It's your fault!"), or rescuer ("Let me fix this!").
Even powerful figures like Mike Tyson can default to victim mode, as when he justified biting Evander Holyfield's ear by claiming, "What am I supposed to do?" These triangles can persist for decades—from tiny spousal arguments to century-spanning international conflicts.
The path to integrity requires recognizing when we're caught in this pattern and deliberately stepping outside it. It's challenging work, but the perspective gained is liberating.
