Three-Part Message
Most of us choose comfort over courage when it comes to delivering feedback, letting issues fester and resentment build. The Three-Part Message framework offers a way through this reluctance.
"When you [describe the behavior non-judgmentally], I feel [communicate your feelings] because [describe the effect]," goes the simple formula. When someone is consistently late to meetings, for instance, you might say: "When you arrive late to our meetings, I feel disrespected because our valuable time is wasted waiting for you."
The power of this approach lies in that final component—describing the wider effect. People often remain unaware of how their actions impact others until explicitly told. The framework separates the person from the problem, focusing on observable behavior rather than character judgments. By structuring feedback this way, we transform a potentially uncomfortable conversation into one that creates clarity, preserves dignity, and invites positive change.
